Mike’s idea of a picnic was so palatial that Morgan recovered her appetite. She ate heartily, laughed a lot and was crushingly polite to Riley. She also, inadvertently, learned considerably more about him. Mike asked a lot of questions and eventually Riley started talking about his work. He described the songs of the humpbacks, the mothering skills of right whales and his few sightings of the rare blue whale, and all the while his passionate love for these great mammals of the ocean, so mysterious and so threatened, shone unguardedly in his face.

By the time he’d finished, Morgan had a lump in her throat. She also found herself with a strong desire to go with him on one of his expeditions and see for herself the leap of dolphins around the bow or the smooth rise from the waves of a finback’s brown bulk. All her spare time in the last few years had been spent in the desert. There were other worlds to explore, she thought; and felt her mind leap to the world she had explored in the night, the world of Riley’s body.

Terrified that her thoughts would show on her face, she loaded her fork with the most delicious key lime pie she’d ever eaten and said enthusiastically, “You must tell us where you got this, Mike, it’s scrumptious.”

Mike looked a little surprised by her change of subject; but he was an agreeable man, and the conversation switched from whales to culinary matters. At one-twenty, after gathering up the remains of the picnic, Mike took his leave. “Appointments all afternoon. ’Bye, Morgan, it was good to meet you.” He clapped Riley on the shoulder. “Good luck in the big city, fella. And look after that leg. See you in January if not before.”

Riley limped out to the car with him. Morgan stayed where she was. She had no idea what she was going to do for the rest of the afternoon. Or for the rest of her life.

Riley’s plan had been accomplished. They’d made love. Now what?

From the patio door Riley said, “I’ve got to put my leg up, Morgan. Keep me company?”

She stood up and went inside. Fiddling with the catch on the door, she said, “I like your friend Mike.”

“One of the best.” With a muffled grunt Riley hauled his leg up on the bed. “I’ve got to tell you about Beth, Morgan. It’s not fair to keep you wondering.”

She gave him a bright, insincere smile. “Well, it’s not really any of my business, is it?”

“Will you for Pete’s sake stop acting as though I’m a total stranger?” he roared. “The whole time Mike was here you behaved like my maiden aunt. You’re my lover, Morgan. My lover! D’you hear me?”

“I’m sure they can hear you at the front desk,” she said spiritedly. “How else was I supposed to behave? Would you rather I’d worn a black bra and nibbled on your ear?”

As abruptly as he’d lost his temper, Riley began to laugh, great hoots of laughter from deep in his chest.
